Hear From Our CEO
The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the University of Utah School of Medicine began in 1979 as a one-person division within the Department of Surgery. Since that time, we have become a celebrated vision institute with an international reputation for excellence in ophthalmology care, research, education, and charitable outreach.
Moran is home to many dedicated faculty and staff members who have helped shaped our strong, comprehensive approach to improving patient care and solving the problems that affect the eye and visual systems. Our gifted researchers were part of the team that completed the first-ever connectome dataset, the Retinal Connectome for Vision. They have made major contributions to our understanding of the genetic underpinnings of macular degeneration, and to the biochemistry and molecular biology of the process by which photoreceptors capture light. They revolutionized treatment for cataract surgery, and continue to advance our understanding and treatment of glaucoma and major retinal diseases.
We offer an excellent didactic training and a superb surgical experience ranked in the Top 10 nationwide. In 2006, the support of many generous donors allowed us to open a new 210,000-square-foot facility that propelled the program to even higher levels. The center’s cutting-edge research group, increased subspecialty patient volumes, and unparalleled global outreach program is hard to match anywhere.
Located at the base of the spectacular Wasatch Mountains, the University of Utah is the flagship institution of higher education in Utah. With world-class skiing, gorgeous desert country, and a population known for friendliness, Salt Lake continues to be ranked among the top cities in which to live, and the postgraduate positions available at the John A. Moran Eye Center provide a superb overall experience. Thank you for your interest in this unique department.
