About the Fellowship
The John A. Under the direction of preceptors Robert Kersten, MD, and Joon Kim, MD, the fellow will obtain comprehensive clinical, surgical, and research experience in complex lacrimal, eyelid, and orbital diseases. The diverse and rare pathology stemming from the largest and busiest vision center in the region offers the fellows exceptional training in adult and pediatric oculofacial surgery.

What Makes Our Fellowship Unique
The John A. Moran Eye Center is the largest vision research and treatment center in the Mountain West, with more than 60 faculty members, 10 satellite clinics, and 20 research laboratories and centers. Physicians provide comprehensive care in all ophthalmic subspecialties, making the Moran Eye Center a major referral center for complex cases, with nearly 175,000 patient visits and about 9,000 surgeries annually.
The entire team provides extensive hands-on training in adult and pediatric oculofacial surgery at three busy teaching hospitals, including the Moran Eye Center, Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Primary Children's Hospital.
The fellows will actively engage in hands-on resident teaching and didactics, including orbital conferences, grand rounds, and journal clubs. The collaborative culture at University of Utah Health allows for frequent interaction with other subspecialties, such as ENT, dermatology, plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and neuroradiology, that will further enhance the educational experience of the fellow.
As with most ophthalmology fellowship programs, ours is not an approved PGY–5 ACGME position. It is, however, affiliated with an ACGME-accredited ophthalmology residency program, and the University provides AUPO-compliant malpractice insurance, as well as medical, dental, and other benefits.
